Headlamps are incredibly light these days. Lithium batteries, improvements in LED tech, and minimal design have all helped manufacturers bring the average headlamp weight down to around 3 ounces. But, as with all ultralight gear, there is always room for improvement. Though the headlamps themselves have advanced greatly, strap technology has remained stagnant. The thick elastic bands used for headlamp straps have become a mainstay of the industry. It’s completely understandable, these elastic straps are simple and effective, but I’m of the mind set that we can do better.

By replacing the heavy elastic straps with a lightweight grosgrain ribbon and adding a small section of shock cord for stretch and comfort you can dramatically reduce the weight of your headlamp. Check out the video below for a tutorial.

I just finished up a new ultralight pack! This pack is the result of trying to simplify a pack design as much as possible while still maximizing function. My goal is to create an easy to follow video and set of patterns so ultimately you can easily recreate this pack for yourself. Details: – Approximately 38L – Weight: 13 oz (369 g) – VX21 body – Gridstop stuff pocket – Replaceable shock cord – Phone pocket – Access the stuff pocket while wearing the pack (the entire pocket is linked together) – Side compression & gear strap (Removable) – Slightly tapered design to aid in compression Would anyone be interested in building a pack similar to this one? (There is still some tweaking to be done.)
