Follow along with us as we head north on the ninth stretch of our flip flop thruhike of the AT across the state of Massachusetts. Massachusetts is where many northbound hikers get their first taste of what the northern forests and mountains are like. Elevation and climbs gradually get tougher throughout the state, mountain tops begin to smell like Christmas, and the trail becomes a thick carpet of brown pine needles leading north. From here on the hiking gets much harder, but the rewards are much greater.
